We opened with a full day of hands-on Wet Labs at Circle Oak Equine and followed with three amazing days of scientific sessions, practice management lectures, case studies, and roundtables at the San Francisco Marriott Marquis and Trade Show at the Marcone Center.

Sue Dyson

MA, Vet MB, PhD, DEO, Dip ECVSMR, FRCVS
Newmarket, Suffolk, England

Speaker Bio
Dr. Sue Dyson has lectured internationally and published more than 230 refereed papers in scientific journals, relating to lameness and diagnostic imaging in the horse. She is co-Editor and major author of ‘Diagnosis and Management of Lameness in the Horse’, ‘Equine Scintigraphy’ and  ‘Clinical Radiology of the Horse’ . In 2000 Sue was awarded the British Equine Veterinary Association John Hickman Orthopaedic Award for outstanding contributions to equine orthopaedics. In 2005 Sue was made an Honorary Member of the British Equine Veterinary Association. In 2007 Sue was awarded the Tierklinik Hochmoor award for outstanding, innovative and lasting contributions to equine veterinary medicine world-wide and in 2013 she received the American Association of Equine Practitioners Frank J. Milne Award. In 2014 Sue was made a Honorary Member of the Societa Italiana Veterinari Per Equini.

Marsha Heinke

DVM, EA, CPA, CVPM

Speaker Bio
First in heart, Marsha L Heinke, DVM, EA, CPA, CVPM is a doctor of veterinary medicine, but her head led to a career serving her colleagues as a consultant and accountant, by gaining additional education and credentials as an Enrolled Agent, a Certified Public Accountant and a Certified Veterinary Practice Manager.  Dr. Heinke is author of Practice Made Perfect: A Complete Guide to Veterinary Practice Management (AAHA Press, 2012). and the Chart of Accounts for Equine Veterinary Practices, available through the American Association of Equine Practitioners. She has co-authored and authored chapter contributions to Veterinary Clinics of North America and The 5-Minute Veterinary Practice Management Consult. Marsha is a 2010 recipient of The Ohio State University Veterinary Medicine Alumni Society, Alumni Recognition Award, in recognition of her contributions to the enhancement of the veterinary medical profession. In 2007, Marsha and her team launched the Dare to Care Program to help veterinary practices improve profitability, reduce avoidable losses, and enhance employee loyalty through HR support.

Michelle Henry Barton

DVM, PhD, Dip ACVIM
Athens, GA

Speaker Bio
Dr. Barton is a 1985 graduate from the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Illinois.  She completed a one year Large Animal Internship at North Carolina State University and then completed a four year combined Large Animal Internal Medicine Residency and PhD in Physiology at the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Georgia.  Dr. Barton holds the Fuller E. Callaway Endowed Chair, is a Josiah Meigs Distinguished Teaching Professor, has served the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine as the Specialty President for Large Animal Internal Medicine, and is currently serving as their Ombudsman. In addition to the appointment in the Clinical Academic Affairs Office overseeing the program for third and fourth year veterinary students, she continues to teach and provide service in the Large Animal Teaching Hospital.

John Madigan

BS, DVM, MS

Speaker Bio
Caring for animals and improving their lives has been the life’s work of Dr. John Madigan.  He is board certified in internal medicine and animal welfare. He has authored over 250 scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings, and is the editor of two textbooks on the care of foals. Dr. Madigan has made many groundbreaking medical discoveries and has created state of the art slings using the animal’s skeletal system support.  He founded the UC Davis Veterinary Emergency Response Team (VERT), which has gained national attention as a Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) under the Office of the Surgeon General.  He was honored to be the recipient of the American Veterinary Medical Association animal welfare award in 2006 and the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine Alumni Achievement award in 2007.  His devotion to improving animal wellbeing led to the dean appointing him as the first Director of the International Animal Welfare Training Institute in 2008.

Elizabeth “Betsy” Charles, DVM, MA believes we all have the capacity to be exceptional people of influence by learning the skills necessary to become effective communicators, relationship builders and boundary setters. Dr. Charles holds a master’s degree in Organization Leadership and uses that expertise to help veterinary professionals understand how servant leaders can facilitate the development of high functioning organizations. She has presented at over half of the veterinary colleges in the U.S., numerous state VMA’s, the AAEP national convention, NAVC, and the AVMA-VLC. Dr. Charles is the Executive Director of the Veterinary Leadership Institute and the CEO and founder of RadiologyRules.

AAEVT members are cordially invited to attend the American Association of Equine Veterinary Technicians & Assistants General Members Meeting. The Executive Board will provide a summary of the year’s projects and activities, a financial overview, outline initiatives for 2019, and install the next year’s Board members. Awards for Member of the Year and Regional Contact of the Year will be presented, along with the 2018 Scholarship winners. This is an important opportunity for you to network and stay involved in our Association as we build and grow our community. We hope to see you all there!
